Corporate investigations are often priced per case rather than hourly, and can run into the thousands depending on scope. Ask whether the investigator does the work themselves or subcontracts it out - you want to know who's actually handling your case.
Confirm they're licensed and insured, and check credentials with your state's regulatory body.
Get fees in writing upfront, hourly, flat rate, or retainer, so there are no surprises later.
Ask about their specific experience with your type of case - surveillance, background checks, and computer forensics all require different skill sets.
Understand their confidentiality policy before you share anything sensitive.
